OpenAI’s Sora Faces Hollywood Roadblocks: Why Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros., and Other Studios Aren’t Ready for AI Yet (Mint)

Hollywood remains skeptical of OpenAI’s Sora, the AI-powered video generator, despite OpenAI’s efforts to establish partnerships with Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. Discovery. While OpenAI has showcased Sora’s potential at industry events, major studios remain hesitant due to concerns over AI’s impact on creative industries, data security, and labor union conflicts—especially following the 2023 Hollywood strikes. With AI being a contentious issue in entertainment, studios fear losing control over their intellectual property without sufficient financial incentives, a mistake they believe was made with the rise of streaming platforms.

While most major studios are reluctant, Lionsgate stands out as an early adopter, securing a partnership with AI startup Runway in 2024 to integrate AI into its productions while retaining content control. Some filmmakers, including Ben Affleck, acknowledge AI’s potential to enhance workflows but reject the idea that it could replace traditional filmmaking. OpenAI remains in early-stage discussions with studios, proposing custom AI models trained on proprietary content for internal use. However, Hollywood’s next steps with AI will likely hinge on securing fair compensation, creative protections, and a cautious approach to innovation.
