Netflix has introduced Content Drive (CDrive), a scalable cloud storage solution designed to support its “Studio in the Cloud” initiative. CDrive manages the lifecycle of billions of media assets with a familiar file-and-folder interface, enabling seamless workflows for artists and studio teams across the globe. Built on CockroachDB, CDrive ensures strong consistency and efficient metadata operations while allowing users to perform file operations like upload, move, share, and more within workspaces tailored for different purposes—personal, team, or project-based. The platform includes advanced features like collaboration tools, access control, and real-time notifications, all while integrating securely with Amazon S3 for data storage.
CDrive’s architecture leverages advanced tools, such as a REST API, GraphQL layers, and event handlers, to manage hierarchical metadata and ensure secure data access. The solution allows Netflix artists to collaborate across geographies while maintaining robust data integrity, handling over 14.2 billion files across 848,000 workspaces as of October 2024. With plans to enhance search capabilities, introduce sharding for large datasets, and support versioning for artist workflows, CDrive is a cornerstone for Netflix’s scalable, cloud-managed studio ecosystem, paving the way for more efficient and secure content production workflows.
