The SMPTE Media Technology Summit recently held in Hollywood attracted 800 industry professionals and focused on innovations like AI, virtual production, HDR, and SMPTE’s ST 2110 IP transport standard. Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers President Renard Jenkins emphasized the industry’s post-pandemic “corrective state,” where production rates are stabilizing after a period of saturation. Jenkins highlighted the responsibility of media professionals to leverage their significant influence ethically and inclusively as they continue adapting new technologies to drive content creation and distribution.
The event included in-depth training on ST 2110, emphasizing the shift from traditional SDI infrastructure to flexible IP-based systems. Sessions also covered advanced timing protocols like PTP for precise synchronization in IP networks, underscoring the operational efficiencies and cost savings associated with IP transitions. This year’s summit featured an expanded student-focused track and guided tours, highlighting innovations from 40 exhibitors. Looking forward, the 2025 SMPTE summit will move to Pasadena, reflecting the organization’s commitment to evolving and enriching industry-wide educational and networking opportunities.
