Warner Bros. Discovery and Google have partnered to create an AI-powered tool called “caption AI,” designed to automatically generate captions for video content. Built on Google’s Vertex AI platform, this tool is initially being used for unscripted programming on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming platform. The new system aims to make captions more accurate while cutting production costs by up to 50% and reducing the time to generate captions by as much as 80%. This collaboration demonstrates the increasing role of AI in streamlining content creation processes in the media industry.
Both companies emphasized the positive impact of AI on efficiency and cost savings, with Avi Saxena, Warner Bros. Discovery’s CTO, praising the speed and quality improvements in their captioning process. Google’s CEO, Thomas Kurian, highlighted the broader potential of AI to transform various media industry workflows. While AI can automate much of the captioning work, both companies stressed that human transcribers will still be necessary to ensure accuracy, balancing technological innovation with job security concerns in the evolving media landscape.
