The latest IABM Talent Shortages in Media Tech report highlights a critical shortage of technical skills in the media industry, with an alarming lack of interest from younger generations. This talent gap has become a major concern for broadcasters and media equipment manufacturers. IABM’s Stuart Ray pointed out that recruitment for technical roles remains challenging, even as other sectors recover from similar shortages. At IBC 2024, initiatives like the World Skills Café and IBC Talent Programme aim to address this issue by fostering discussions and offering solutions for bridging the growing skills gap in the industry.
Despite ongoing efforts, Ray emphasizes that the shortage has persisted for years, with a particular lack of young talent pursuing technical roles in media production. While many young people are interested in creative production jobs, there is less interest in the technical side, which is crucial to the industry’s future. Ray suggests that industry initiatives, such as the Global Media and Entertainment Talent Manifesto and the Rise Up Academy, must focus on engaging the 14 to 18-year-old demographic to spark interest in the media tech field and ensure a pipeline of skilled professionals in the coming years.
